Playing More Than One Sport May Build A More Resilient Athlete

Can Playing Multiple Sports Build Athlete Resilience

For young athletes and their families, specialization can feel like the safest route to success.

If a child loves baseball, the logic seems simple: play more baseball. Join another team. Train year-round. Attend more camps. Reduce anything that competes for practice time.

New research published in July 2026 challenges that assumption.

A study involving decades of professional baseball data and nearly 97,000 historical player survey responses found that baseball players who had also participated in high-school track later performed better in parts of professional baseball than comparable players who had specialized only in baseball. Major League Baseball teams did not appear to reward that track background through higher draft positions or signing bonuses.

That does not prove that every young athlete should immediately sign up for three sports.

It does support a broader idea: becoming a better athlete does not always require making one sport the center of every season, every movement pattern, and eventually every part of an athlete’s identity.

For CPCWA, the resilience lesson is especially important.

A resilient athlete is not simply someone who can tolerate more training. Resilience can also involve adaptability: learning different skills, functioning in different groups, managing changing roles, recovering from setbacks, and maintaining a sense of self when one sport is temporarily unavailable.

Multisport participation may help create some of those opportunities—but only when the total workload remains realistic and the athlete still has time to recover.

What The July 2026 Baseball Study Found

The new research was published online on July 15, 2026, in the Journal of Sport Management under the title “Do Teams Value Generalized Training? Performance, Draft Position, and Compensation in Professional Baseball.”

The authors were Tiberiu Ungureanu, Jason Sigler, Zeynep Yavic, and Christopher M. McLeod. McLeod is an associate professor in the Department of Sport Management at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The University of Florida publicly reported the findings on July 16, 2026. The researchers connected long-term professional baseball performance records with nearly 97,000 historical surveys originally collected by baseball historian William Weiss. Those surveys included information about sports the players had participated in during high school.

The researchers were particularly interested in athletes who had played baseball and competed in track.

Their analysis found that track participation was associated with better later professional performance, particularly in areas connected with base running and fielding. The researchers suggested that transferable abilities such as speed, explosiveness, and timing may help explain the relationship.

They also tried to address an obvious problem with the comparison.

What The July 2026 Baseball Study Found

Maybe baseball players who chose track were simply faster or more athletic to begin with.

To reduce that possibility, the researchers used a statistical technique called Coarsened Exact Matching to compare players with similar characteristics, including height and weight. The relationship between track participation and later baseball performance remained.

The finding was not universal across every sport.

Basketball and football participation did not show the same consistent relationship with professional baseball performance.

McLeod specifically cautioned that multisport participation is not a one-size-fits-all answer. The potential value depends partly on whether skills developed in one sport transfer meaningfully into another.

That limitation is important.

The study does not demonstrate that simply accumulating sports automatically produces better athletes.

MLB Teams Did Not Seem To Reward The Advantage

One of the most interesting findings involved scouting.

The researchers examined previously underused baseball scouting information and found little evidence that teams valued a track background when evaluating players.

Players who had participated in high-school track were not consistently drafted higher or given larger signing bonuses, even though their track background was associated with later performance advantages. In some scouting reports, track participation was reportedly viewed negatively as a possible distraction from baseball.

McLeod compared the finding to a “Moneyball” problem: useful information may be present without organizations fully incorporating it into their talent decisions.

For parents, the lesson is different.

Young athletes do not necessarily need to organize their childhood around what they believe a future scout might want to see.

Specializing earlier does not guarantee that the athlete will develop the abilities that eventually matter most.

Multisport Participation Is Not The Same As Psychological Resilience

The word resilience needs some care here.

The University of Florida baseball study did not measure psychological resilience, mental health, confidence, burnout, or coping ability.

It measured athletic backgrounds and later baseball-related outcomes.

So the study cannot tell us that playing track makes a baseball player mentally tougher.

The resilience connection is a broader interpretation based on what diversification can potentially provide: experience with different movement problems, coaching styles, teammates, performance expectations, successes, failures, and definitions of progress.

A young basketball player who also swims may discover that they are a beginner again.

A baseball player who runs track may learn a different relationship with speed, individual preparation, and competition.

A soccer player who wrestles may experience an entirely different kind of pressure and responsibility.

Those experiences may create more opportunities to adapt.

But whether they actually improve a particular athlete’s psychological resilience depends on the quality of the environments, workload, coaching, motivation, health, and individual circumstances.

More sports are not automatically better.

What Broader Research Says About Early Specialization

The July baseball findings fit into a larger discussion about early sport specialization.

A 2025 rapid review led by Emily J. Luo of Duke University School of Medicine, with researchers from Duke and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, evaluated 93 studies involving 62,327 athletes.

The athletes in those studies averaged 15.9 years old, while the average reported age of specialization was 11.6 years. Researchers examined injury, function, athletic performance, sport success, and psychological outcomes. (early sport specialization review)

The findings were not identical across every sport or every outcome.

Of the studies examining injury, early or high specialization was generally associated with greater injury risk. The review also found no clear overall advantage for early specialization in sport success.

Psychological findings were more mixed.

Among 18 studies examining psychological outcomes, seven found worse outcomes among more specialized athletes, nine found no significant difference, and two reported better outcomes. The review therefore supports caution rather than a claim that specialization inevitably causes mental-health problems.

That is the kind of distinction young athletes need.

Possible risk is not destiny.

A specialized athlete is not automatically headed for burnout, just as a multisport athlete is not automatically protected from it.

A Broader Identity Can Matter When Injury Happens

Professional Football Offers Another Useful Clue

Another 2026 study provides an interesting example from professional football.

Researchers Gnaneswar Chundi, Abhiram Dawar, Zachary Fuller, Tuckerman Jones, Shriyaus Lingam, and Balazs Galdi at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark examined 2,556 NFL players drafted between 2011 and 2023 who had played at least 16 professional games. (NFL specialization study)

Approximately 63.6% of the players had participated in multiple sports during high school.

Compared with football-only athletes, the multisport players experienced lower total and major injury rates in the retrospective analysis. They also played an average of 12.2 additional NFL games and had careers approximately 0.7 years longer.

Those are associations.

The study cannot prove that playing another high-school sport directly caused a longer NFL career. Athletes who choose several sports may differ in many other ways, and the research relied partly on publicly available athletic and injury records.

Still, the results challenge the idea that football players need to eliminate every other sport early in order to create the longest possible professional pathway.

Variety Can Give An Athlete More Than Physical Skills

Playing multiple sports can potentially broaden more than movement.

Different sports can expose an athlete to different situations:

  • Being the best player in one environment and an inexperienced player in another
  • Working with different teammates and coaches
  • Switching between individual and team responsibility
  • Learning new movement patterns rather than repeating the same ones year-round
  • Discovering abilities that are not visible in the primary sport
  • Experiencing different ways of winning, losing, practicing, communicating, and improving

That variety can matter psychologically because resilience often requires flexibility.

A young athlete whose entire sense of competence comes from one activity has fewer places to turn when that activity becomes difficult.

An athlete with several interests may have more ways to remain active and connected when one season ends or one sport becomes unavailable.

That does not mean every athlete needs multiple competitive identities.

The goal is breadth, not a more crowded résumé.

A Broader Identity Can Matter When Injury Happens

One of the risks of highly concentrated sport participation is that the activity can become more than something the young person does.

It can become the answer to:

Who am I?

That identity may feel powerful while the athlete is healthy and performing well.

It can become fragile after an injury.

A baseball player who also enjoys running, music, school clubs, friendships, or another sport still loses something meaningful when baseball is interrupted. But baseball may not be the only available source of routine, competence, community, and self-worth.

That distinction can help during recovery.

The objective is not to tell injured athletes to replace their sport.

It is to make sure the athlete is larger than the sport.

More Sports Can Still Become Too Much

Multisport participation has an important downside when adults misunderstand the message.

A young athlete can play soccer, basketball, and baseball and still be badly overloaded.

Changing uniforms does not guarantee recovery.

The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that excessive training loads can contribute to overuse injury, overtraining, burnout, impaired well-being, and eventual withdrawal from sports. Its updated clinical report notes that more than 60 million U.S. children and adolescents participate in organized sports and that injury and burnout are among the factors associated with young athletes leaving organized competition. The important variable is not simply the number of sports.

It is total demand.

A multisport athlete still needs rest.

They still need adequate sleep, nutrition, medical attention when injured, and a schedule that leaves room for development outside competition.

Parents Do Not Need To Engineer The Perfect Athletic Childhood

The July 2026 University of Florida findings may be especially useful for parents who feel they are constantly falling behind.

Travel teams, private training, showcases, camps, rankings, recruiting information, and social media can create the impression that another family is always doing more.

McLeod specifically noted the anxiety parents can experience when trying to make the “right” decision about a child’s athletic future. The new baseball research provides evidence that specializing exclusively in baseball early does not necessarily produce better long-term outcomes.

That does not mean parents now need to create a scientifically optimized combination of sports.

Track helped in this particular baseball dataset.

Basketball and football did not demonstrate the same consistent effect.

Another sport might involve completely different developmental needs.

The better question is not:

Which second sport will maximize my child’s future value?

It is:

Does this athletic environment help my child develop, stay healthy, remain curious, and still want to participate?

Coaches Can Make Variety Feel Like Development, Not Disloyalty

Young athletes can receive conflicting messages from different adults.

A school coach may encourage another sport while a club coach wants year-round participation. A trainer may recommend additional work. Parents may worry that missing a tournament will close future opportunities.

That tension can place the decision on the athlete.

Coaches can reduce pressure by making it clear that participating elsewhere is not automatically evidence of poor commitment.

A baseball player running track is still a baseball player.

A basketball player trying volleyball is not necessarily falling behind.

An athlete taking a genuine offseason has not stopped caring.

The University of Florida study is especially valuable because the players with track experience were not simply avoiding serious baseball development. They ultimately reached professional baseball.

Their broader athletic background did not prevent specialization later.

Some Sports Have Different Developmental Timelines

The discussion also requires an important exception.

Not every sport follows the same pathway.

Sports in which peak performance or highly technical skill development occurs unusually early may have different specialization patterns from sports such as baseball, football, or basketball.

The evidence base also contains substantial differences in how researchers define “early specialization,” how they measure training exposure, and which athletes they study. The 2025 Duke/UNC review explicitly noted considerable heterogeneity across the available research.

Families should therefore avoid turning a general finding into an individual training prescription.

Questions about training volume, injury history, growth, recovery, or safe participation should be discussed with qualified pediatric, sports-medicine, athletic-training, or coaching professionals who understand the athlete and sport involved.

Resilience Is Having More Than One Way Forward

The most useful lesson from multisport research may not be that every child needs another sport.

It may be that development benefits from options.

The July 2026 baseball study found that athletes could bring valuable abilities from another sport into professional baseball. The 2026 Rutgers NFL study found that players with multisport high-school backgrounds had lower injury rates and longer careers in that retrospective cohort. Broader pediatric research suggests that early specialization carries possible physical and psychological tradeoffs without providing a universal advantage in eventual sport success.

None of those findings means multisport participation guarantees success.

They do challenge the belief that commitment must always mean narrowing.

For a young athlete, resilience can include learning that there are several ways to move, compete, improve, connect, and belong.

That makes sport diversification more than a strategy for creating a better baseball player or football player.

Used thoughtfully, it can help create an athlete who knows that one team, one season, one setback, or one result does not define every possible way forward.
